About Us – The Gardens at San Carlos

Assisted Living Home in Tucson, AZ

At The Gardens at San Carlos, we provide personalized assisted living and early-stage memory care in a calm, residential setting in Tucson. Our intentionally small 10-resident home allows us to know each person by name, routine, preference, and personality. Since opening in 2019, we have remained committed to relationship-based senior care, consistent caregivers, private rooms, and honest communication with families. We believe older adults deserve more than basic support. They deserve dignity, patience, comfort, and a place where they feel genuinely known, respected, and at home.

How Our Story Began

Our story began with Angela Keuhn’s experience in senior care more than ten years ago. What started as a caregiving role quickly became a calling rooted in compassion and respect. Through daily work with residents and families, she saw how meaningful thoughtful, personal care could be.

Angela also saw how easily residents could feel overlooked in larger facilities. Busy hallways, changing staff members, and institutional routines sometimes made it difficult for caregivers to understand each person deeply. She became determined to help create a different kind of environment where relationships would always come first.

The Gardens at San Carlos opened in 2019 as a small residential assisted living and memory care home, one of two Gardens locations in Tucson. From the beginning, our vision was to create a secure, comfortable place that felt like a real home rather than a corporate facility.

Why We Chose to Remain Small

Our 10-resident setting is intentional. We are not trying to become the largest senior living community in the area. We believe our size allows us to provide the familiarity, responsiveness, and personal attention that many residents and families are seeking.

In a smaller home, caregivers have more opportunities to notice changes in mood, appetite, comfort, sleep, mobility, or daily habits. These details matter because they can help us respond more thoughtfully. They also allow residents to feel recognized rather than simply managed through a schedule.

Remaining small has required us to prioritize relationships over rapid expansion. That decision has shaped who we are and strengthened our belief that consistent caregivers and genuine attention can create better experiences for residents while giving families greater peace of mind, whether they choose our San Carlos home or our Norton Avenue location.

A Residential Setting With Personal Comfort

The Gardens at San Carlos is designed to feel peaceful, familiar, and welcoming. Residents have private rooms with private bathrooms, giving them personal space and greater comfort. Shared areas create opportunities for conversation and connection without making the environment feel busy or overwhelming.

A residential setting can be especially helpful for seniors who feel uncomfortable in large communities. The quieter atmosphere, smaller number of residents, and familiar caregivers create a more predictable daily experience. That consistency may be particularly valuable for individuals receiving early-stage memory care.

We want residents to feel that they are living in a home, not passing through an institution. Daily life should include comfort, personal choice, companionship, and routines that reflect the individual rather than forcing every resident into the same pattern.

Personalized Assisted Living Support

Every resident arrives with a different life story, level of independence, personality, and set of needs. Our assisted living approach begins by learning about the person. We want to understand what brings comfort, which routines matter, and how we can provide support without taking away independence unnecessarily.

Personalized care may include assistance with daily activities, reminders, mobility support, meals, personal routines, and companionship, along with short-term respite care services when families need extra support. We approach each need with patience and respect. Our goal is to help residents feel supported while preserving their dignity and encouraging participation whenever possible.

Because our home serves only 10 residents, our team can become familiar with subtle preferences. Knowing how someone likes their morning, what foods they enjoy, or when they prefer quiet time helps care feel more natural, respectful, and personal.

Thoughtful Early-Stage Memory Care

Memory changes can affect communication, confidence, routines, and a person’s sense of security. Families often need a care setting that provides additional support without feeling clinical or impersonal. Our early-stage memory care approach centers on familiarity, patience, consistency, and meaningful relationships.
Our caregivers complete state-approved memory care training and use personalized daily routines to help residents feel more grounded. Consistent staffing also helps reduce the confusion that can occur when unfamiliar caregivers are constantly introduced into a resident’s day.
We understand that memory care is not only about responding to symptoms. It is about seeing the full person behind the diagnosis. We focus on abilities, preferences, emotional well-being, and the small moments of connection that can make each day feel safer and more meaningful.

A Team Chosen for Skill and Heart

Our caregivers are Arizona-certified and hold CPR and First Aid credentials. They also complete state-approved memory care training. These qualifications provide an important foundation, but we believe excellent senior care requires more than certifications alone.

When we welcome someone onto our team, we pay close attention to personality and interpersonal qualities. We look for people who are naturally patient, observant, kind, and able to recognize needs that may not always be expressed directly. Technical ability and genuine compassion must work together.

Our team members treat residents with dignity and make an effort to understand each person. We value caregivers who listen carefully, communicate openly, and take responsibility. Those qualities help create the dependable, relationship-based care families expect from our home, and reflect the same standards our Blenman Elms team upholds as well.

Meet Angela Keuhn, Resident Services Manager

Angela Keuhn brings more than ten years of hands-on caregiving experience to her role as Resident Services Manager. She works closely with residents, families, and caregivers to create an environment where people feel heard, respected, and comfortable asking questions.

Her approach is shaped by both professional experience and personal understanding. As a mother and grandmother, Angela knows how difficult it can be to trust someone else with a loved one’s care. She takes that responsibility seriously and remains closely involved in the resident experience.

Angela’s daily goal is simple: help every resident feel safe, comfortable, and genuinely cared for. Her story reflects the culture of our entire home, where patience, kindness, observation, and attention to detail guide the way we serve. Families can read more about these experiences in our resident and family reviews.

Direct Communication With Local Leadership

Families should not have to navigate corporate phone trees or wait for distant administrators to return an important call. At The Gardens at San Carlos, families have direct access to local leadership and real people who know their loved one personally.

Open communication helps families stay informed and feel included. We provide honest updates, answer questions, and discuss changes as they arise. We know family members often carry significant emotional responsibility, so clear and compassionate communication is an essential part of our care.

When a concern occurs, we address it promptly and openly. Our first priority is always the resident’s well-being. We listen carefully, review the situation, and work directly with the family and care team to determine the most appropriate response, and we welcome families to reach out directly with any concerns.

Trusted by Tucson Families Since 2019

Since 2019, we have helped families seeking a smaller alternative to traditional assisted living facilities. Many are adult children trying to find a safe, supportive home for a parent while managing emotions, medical concerns, finances, and difficult family decisions.

Families often recommend us because residents are genuinely known and the environment feels welcoming. They appreciate our consistent caregivers, private accommodations, direct communication, and thoughtful attention. These qualities can make a significant difference during an emotional transition, especially for families who have recently recognized that a parent needs more support.

One family described our staff as “angels” and shared how warmly they were welcomed during visits, even when bringing a beloved pet. Feedback like this reminds us that meaningful care includes the entire family and the relationships that remain important to each resident.

Our Promise to Residents and Families

Our promise is that every resident will be known, respected, and cared for with both skill and heart. We do not view people as room numbers or care tasks. We see individuals with histories, preferences, relationships, strengths, and the right to be treated with dignity.

Families can expect transparent pricing, clear communication, and consistent care without hidden fees. We explain our approach and answer questions honestly so families can make informed decisions. Trust begins with clarity, especially when choosing a home for someone deeply loved.

We cannot promise that every day will be without challenges, but we can promise to remain present and accountable. When needs change or concerns arise, we respond openly, communicate directly, and keep the resident’s comfort and well-being at the center of every decision. We also welcome families to share their experience through our feedback page.

What to Expect During Your First Conversation

Reaching out to a senior care home can feel emotional, especially when a family is unsure what level of support is needed. Our first conversation is warm, informative, and pressure-free. We begin by listening to what your family is experiencing and what matters most.

We can discuss your loved one’s current routines, care needs, personality, concerns, and preferences. We will also explain our setting, services, availability, pricing approach, and whether our home may be a suitable fit. There is no expectation that you already have everything figured out.

A conversation does not commit you to a decision. It simply gives you useful information and a clearer understanding of your options. Many families feel a sense of relief once they speak with someone who understands what they are facing, and our blog articles can also help answer common questions beforehand.
