Memory Care in Tucson, AZ

Memory Care, Made Personal

At The Gardens at San Carlos, residents living with memory loss are surrounded by genuine comfort, steady routines, and caregivers who take the time to truly know them. With just ten residents, every detail of daily life is thoughtfully shaped to support each person's dignity, well-being, and sense of belonging—whether their memory care needs are in an early or more advanced stage.

Small by Design

We're not a large institutional facility—and we don't want to be. With ten residents, we're able to offer the kind of calm, consistent, relationship-based care that simply can't happen in bigger settings. Many families come to us after experiences at larger communities where noise, staff turnover, and the sheer size of the environment made it difficult for their loved one to adjust. Here, things are quieter and more familiar. Residents find their footing faster, connect more naturally with caregivers, and experience the stability that memory care residents need to thrive.

Caregivers Who Truly Care

Our caregivers are the heart of our home. We hire for warmth, patience, and genuine connection, using in-person interviews with resident interaction to see how candidates truly relate before joining our team. This thoughtful process helps us build a stable staff families trust. Caregivers learn each resident’s preferences in depth—from daily routines to small cues—and follow detailed written profiles to keep care consistent. Combined with our low staff-to-resident ratio, this approach helps every resident feel known, comfortable, and genuinely cared for.

Specialized Training That Makes a Difference

We have extensive training in dementia care, including the Montessori approach to memory care. This philosophy emphasizes independence, dignity, and each resident’s identity rather than a diagnosis. Our administrator shares this knowledge through ongoing mentorship, guiding our team to deliver thoughtful, individualized support. Whether a resident joins us for assisted living or memory care, our team is trained to provide attentive, person-centered care.

Memory Care

Frequently Asked Questions

Is memory care the right next step for my loved one?

Memory care is best suited for individuals experiencing more significant cognitive decline—confusion, repeated disorientation, difficulty managing daily life independently, or behaviors that require more specialized support. At The Gardens, we offer early-stage memory care at our San Carlos location. For residents with more advanced needs, our sister home—The Gardens at Blenman Elm—provides that level of care in an equally warm, small-home setting. We'll always help you find the right fit for your loved one's current and evolving needs.

We offer free care assessments to help you evaluate next steps. If you're not quite ready for a care assessment, free to call us at (520) 214-1195. We can often determine basic fit right over the phone.

What makes your dementia care different from other providers?

The Gardens at San Carlos isn’t part of a large facility—it’s a quiet residential home designed for comfort, clarity, and calm. With just ten residents, a familiar layout, and a steady daily rhythm, our setting helps residents feel grounded quickly and comfortably from the moment they arrive.

With fewer people and distractions, residents often adjust more smoothly. Families frequently share that their loved ones seem calmer, more connected, and less overwhelmed here than they felt in larger, more institutional environments.

Is your home secure for residents with dementia?

Yes. Our home is fully secured with coded entry and exit on all doors and gates—only staff can let someone in or out. Elopement risk can often be accommodated—we encourage families to bring it up during a care assessment so we can evaluate fit together. Our security measures are discreet and designed to keep residents safe without creating an institutional or restrictive atmosphere.

What kind of training do your caregivers receive?

All caregivers at The Gardens are certified through the Arizona Nursing Board and hold CPR, First Aid, fingerprint clearance, and food handler's credentials. They also complete a state-approved memory care training course. We have extensive training in dementia care—including the Montessori approach—and provide ongoing, hands-on mentorship to our team that goes well beyond what the state requires. Training here isn’t a one-time checklist—it’s an ongoing part of how we care.

We hire every team member based on personality and interpersonal quality as much as credentials. We look for caregivers who are naturally patient, observant, and warm—people who know how to read a resident's needs and respond with genuine kindness. That combination of rigorous training and intentional hiring is what sets our team apart.

How do you get to know each resident so personally?

Great care begins with truly knowing each person. From move-in on, we learn every resident’s story, routines, and comforts—and keep learning over time. Caregivers know the details that matter, from favorite foods and music to sleep patterns, hearing aids, and how someone takes their coffee. Written resident profiles guide caregivers for consistent, personalized care, and our resident council ensures each voice is heard in daily life.

How do you support social connection in memory care?

Social connection matters at every stage of life, especially for those living with memory loss. Our caregivers make time daily for meaningful interaction—friendly conversation for those who enjoy it and calm reassurance for those who need quiet support. Mealtimes create natural connection, with residents gathering around the table where familiar faces, routines, and light conversation bring comfort.

At The Gardens, we thoughtfully structure social time for assisted living and early-stage memory care residents, helping each person experience connection that feels natural and reassuring.

How does memory care pricing work at The Gardens?

Pricing at The Gardens is designed to be clear and personalized based on your loved one’s needs. Monthly rates vary depending on the type of room, accommodations, and the level of assistance required with daily activities. Because every resident’s situation is a little different, we review care needs and room preferences together to provide an accurate estimate.

Short-term respite care and in-home care are also available with separate pricing structures.

How can I check availability or schedule a tour?

You can easily check availability by visiting our Check Availability page.

You can also schedule a tour to walk through the home and get your questions answered. Many families choose to complete a free care assessment at the same time as their tour.

Can I visit my loved one anytime?

Yes—visits are always welcome and never treated like a formality. Families are encouraged to come by, share a meal, sit outside by the pool, or simply spend time together. Our preferred visiting hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., though we're flexible for families with different schedules—just coordinate with us in advance if you're planning a later visit.

For group visits or special requests—like bringing outside guests or pets—we just ask for a quick heads-up so we can make sure the timing works well for everyone in the home. But everyday visits? Those are part of what makes this feel like home.
